The Spanish dining schedule runs late — lunch is often 2-4pm and dinner rarely starts before 9pm; restaurants that look "closed" mid-afternoon are frequently just on their siesta break, not shut for the day.
Tourist-trap watch
Restaurants directly on Plaza Mayor are a well-known overpriced tourist zone; La Latina and Malasaña a short walk away offer both better tapas and better prices.
Worth knowing
The Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums each have specific free-entry windows (typically a few hours in the evening) — worth checking current hours if budget-conscious.

Many smaller Madrid bars and tapas spots are cash-preferred, especially for small tabs.
