DESTINATION GUIDE
New York

New York doesn't ease you in — it expects you to keep pace from the moment you arrive, and rewards travelers who pick a few neighborhoods to know well over trying to see everything.

A few things decide already knows about New York before it even runs a live search - grounded background, not a substitute for the price checks a real itinerary still runs.

Getting around
The subway runs 24/7 at a flat tap-to-pay fare (OMNY or MetroCard) and is usually faster than a taxi or rideshare through Manhattan traffic; from JFK or LaGuardia, the AirTrain-plus-subway combination is far cheaper than a taxi, if slower.
What things cost
A mid-range hotel runs roughly $180-350/night depending on season and neighborhood; a mid-range dinner for two is closer to $135-145 before drinks, while a solid slice of pizza or food-cart meal is $4-8 — the gap between casual and sit-down dining is large.
Tourist-trap watch
Restaurants directly on Times Square charge a real premium for unremarkable food compared to a few blocks away in Hell's Kitchen; street vendors selling discount souvenirs or electronics near major sights are a reliable source of low-quality goods at inflated prices.
Worth knowing
Timed-entry tickets for the Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, and the Statue of Liberty ferry can sell out days ahead in peak season — book in advance rather than assuming same-day availability.
Practical
Tipping around 20% at sit-down restaurants is customary, not optional in the way it might read to a first-time visitor; expect to walk a lot, so comfortable shoes matter more here than in most cities.
Dietary notes
Vegetarian, vegan, kosher, and halal options are all well represented even in casual spots — one of the easier major cities to accommodate a dietary restriction without much advance planning.
