Dubai builds upward and outward faster than any city has a right to, but its older quarters (the creek, the souks) still move at a slower, more human pace than the skyline suggests.

Getting around
The Dubai Metro is clean, driverless, and connects most tourist areas plus the airport directly; metered taxis are a reliable, reasonably priced alternative for anywhere the metro doesn't reach.
What things cost
A mid-range hotel runs roughly AED 270-450/night (~$75-125); a mid-range dinner for two is closer to AED 250-340 (~$70-95) — costs climb fast at anything branded as a luxury or resort experience.
Tourist-trap watch
Unlicensed "desert safari" touts and gold souk vendors in Deira routinely quote inflated first prices expecting negotiation — haggling is normal and expected in souks, while mall prices are fixed and non-negotiable.
Worth knowing
Burj Khalifa "At the Top" tickets are noticeably cheaper booked online in advance than at the door, and price varies a lot by time slot — sunset is the most expensive and sells out first.
Practical
Modest dress is expected outside beach/resort areas (shoulders and knees covered in malls and mosques); alcohol is only served in licensed hotels and restaurants, not sold in ordinary shops; summer heat (June-September, regularly 40°C+) makes daytime outdoor activity genuinely miserable.
Dietary notes
Halal food is the default virtually everywhere, and the modern dining scene (especially around JBR and Downtown) has strong vegetarian and vegan options alongside it.
